My son and I headed to the city today to visit my husband’s new office. After meeting his co-workers, we went out to lunch. While snacking on the appetizer and watching our son wave hello to everyone who walked by on the sidewalk, I noticed that the restaurant was quickly filling up with other business people on their lunch break.
I took a look around and saw suits, business casual, and really casual. My husband fell into the business casual category. I fell into the really casual category.
I’ve been working from home for the last five years. Before this position, I worked for a start-up company in a relaxed office setting. We had a big screen television and a Wii game set in our break room. The first day on the job, I wore dress pants and a dress shirt paired with pumps. My boss, who was wearing jeans and a t-shirt, walked up to me and said, “You know, that’s not necessary. Feel free to wear jeans tomorrow.” So, every day from then on at the company I wore jeans. Typical start-up, right?
Before that position, even though I worked for smaller companies, I still had to wear business/business casual clothes every day on the job. So, you can imagine that wearing jeans to work was a nice departure.
Fast forward to my work-at-home days and I quickly found myself glued to the computer at all hours of the day and night as I typed away, sent emails, and uploaded information all in the comfort of my home … and yoga pants. There were days when I would come downstairs wearing jeans and my husband would ask, “What’s the occasion?” Yes, it was a big deal when I would wear jeans. Yes, I would (and still do) shower every day. But, when I had no plans to go anywhere, why get all dressed up?
It’s interesting how your wardrobe can change based on what’s happening in your life. A few days ago, I had this conversation with my mother-in-law. She recently retired from her position after 35 years. She talked to me about how her wardrobe is different now that she’s retired. From dressing up to dressing down, her style uniform changed in the blink of an eye.
And then there’s my husband. After years of wearing an actual uniform, his new position changed his style uniform to business casual.
And then there’s me. I went from working in an office and having to wear business attire to working at home and wearing whatever makes me feel comfortable and productive.
What’s My Style Uniform?
Take a peak into my closet and first off you’ll notice that black is my favorite color. I have quite a collection of black tops. Second, you’ll notice that I love skinny jeans and yoga pants. Third? I love tan shoes.
Pair all of them together and what do you have? My style uniform. You can usually find me in skinny jeans/yoga pants, a black top, and tan sandals/boots. Yes, I pretty much wear that outfit every day.
