When I found out that I was pregnant, I was set on not finding out the gender. My husband was totally in agreement until we reached the point where we could find out the gender. At each appointment, all he wanted to do was find out the gender.
At one point, he asked, “What if we found out and kept the secret to ourselves?” If there’s one thing that you should know about my husband, it’s that he’s not the best when it comes to secrets. I love him to pieces but he is completely loose-lipped when it comes to secrets. I knew that he wouldn’t be able to hide that secret from everyone. And trust me, many people couldn’t believe that we were keeping the gender a surprise which only added to the pressure of not finding out the gender.
So, through all of the months of pregnancy, he hemmed and hawed while I remained sold on the idea of not finding out the gender. I couldn’t wait until the baby arrived and that moment when he would be able to announce the gender.
Until then, I researched all sorts of neutral nurseries and created a registry full of gender neutral items. I loved creating a space for our baby that was warm, welcoming, and neutral. When the room was complete, I couldn’t help but walk into the room at least once a day and spend a good couple of minutes in there in anticipation of the baby’s arrival.
When my baby arrived, hearing my husband say, “It’s a boy!” was one of my favorite moments of my life. We were so set on the baby being a girl, as were my family, friends, and doctors. Being the defiant baby that he was (and still is), he proved everyone wrong.
In the end, it all worked out and we couldn’t have been happier with our decision. When I asked my husband whether or not he would want to keep the next baby’s gender a surprise (no, I’m not pregnant), without hesitation he said, “Yes, let’s keep it a secret.”
