Whether we were living in an apartment, rowhouse, or detached home, my husband always find ourselves spending as much time as possible on a terrace. When we lived in a one-bedroom apartment, we made sure to have a terrace outfitted with a grill and bistro set. After moving into our city rowhouse, we decorated our backyard deck with a tables, chairs, plants, grill, and outdoor lighting. As we were shopping for a house in the ‘burbs, we knew that a backyard porch was a must-have checklist item.
When we came across a home with a screened-in porch / non-screened-in porch combo with composite decking that overlooked an expansive backyard, we knew we struck gold. As soon as we walked through the front door, our eyes locked on the porch and we immediately walked toward the outdoor living area. We knew that the bones of the house were there. We knew that the house was in a great location. We knew that the house had an unbeatable outdoor living space.
So, what makes a terrace, porch, and/or a deck comfortable and enjoyable?
Simple Must-Have Outdoor Decor for a Terrace or Porch
1.) Seating
Seating is key when it comes to spending time in your outdoor space. You need to select furniture that is correct for the space. Plus, you want to have enough seating to enjoy the space with family and friends. If you live an apartment, think about either a wood or metal bistro set. If you have a larger deck, then offer more seating for your guests. For our screened-in porch, we went with the classic and comfortable look of wicker couches and chaise loungers with white cushions. Yes, we have a one and a half year old. But, believe me when I tell you that all I have to do is unzip the fabric, toss it into the washer and dryer, and then put it back on the cushions for a fresh, clean look whenever I see stains.
2.) Fan
Never underestimate the power of a fan in an outdoor seating area. If you have a front porch, think about installing a fan. If you have a screened-in porch, turn on your fan and enjoy it. Weather can be hot, sticky, and close. Having a fan in your outdoor area will help circulate the air and keep the cooler.
3.) Table
It’s always nice to have a spot to place appetizers, cocktails, candles, etc. Whether it’s an outdoor dining table or coffee table, be sure to have a flat surface that serves as a table.
4.) Lanterns
I love having lanterns throughout my outdoor space. Lighting the candles when the sun goes down lets off a light and ambiance that is comforting and relaxing. Be sure to buy candles that are unscented so that you don’t overpower the natural setting with artificial scents.
5.) Lighting
In our pergola, I strung cafe lights that always add the perfect amount of lighting to our outdoor space. You can buy string lights in all shapes and sizes to give your outdoor space the perfect ambiance.
6.) Rug
There are so many different types, sizes, and colors of indoor/outdoor rugs that will help soften an outdoor space and add a pop of color and texture. For our outdoor space, we went with a jute rug that softens the space, adds texture, and hides dirt. With two dogs and a toddler, that is key.
7.) Plants
Set out plants on either a table or on a plant holder to add a bit of greenery to your outdoor space.

Hi Jen,
That’s an interesting idea about installing a fan! I never thought of that for some reason. I guess I thought that outside is outside and it is supposed to be refreshing already, without extra devices :D
I guess I am now buying a fan for my backyard!

My brother-in-law had a fan on his front porch at his old house and it was wonderful. We have a fan installed in our screened-in back porch and we use it all the time. We love it.
