When you look around your house, do you see a jumble of different colors, patterns ,and designs? Or, do you see a flowing and unified theme? Which do you want to see?
If your answer to the first question doesn’t line up with your answer to the second question, then you’re not alone. It’s easy for the décor in our homes to feel sporadic and uncoordinated. This happens so easily because we obtain different items throughout our lives and hardly ever get rid of our older items—which means your new and bright lampshade is right next to your rustic picture frame.
Figuring out what your design style is and adjusting your décor from there will help you turn your home into the beautiful and peaceful getaway perfect enough to be featured in a design magazine. Here’s how to do it.
Declutter Your Home by Embracing Your Design Style
Look for Inspiration
You know when you’re scrolling through Pinterest and you see a picture of a living room that makes you think how much you’d love that to be your living room? That speaks to your design style and that’s exactly what you have to do before touching any of your décor.
Look through Pinterest and pin anything that catches your eye. You can also get a few design magazines and flip through the pages, cutting out the pictures that make you stop and look. Hopefully, as you’re creating your very own inspiration board you’ll start to notice some patterns. There might be a certain color you keep picking out or a specific theme you love. These patterns will help you decide what you want your home to look like.
You can also look to yourself for inspiration. Ask yourself questions, such as:
- Where do you enjoy spending time?
- Are you a beach or a country person?
- Do you daydream about exciting adventures or quiet cozy nights?
All of these questions can help you decipher what your home should look like.
If you love the beach and are thinking about your next tropical getaway, maybe you want bright colors and patterns in your home. If you envision nights by the fire and cozy slippers, warmer tones and cozy décor might be for you. You want your home to be your safe haven, so it needs to speak to your desires and joys.
Revise and Edit Your Space
Once you have an idea of what your design style is, it’s time to start picking out your décor. Start by choosing a room or a section of a room and taking everything in that area out. Put it on your dining room table or anywhere that is separate from that space. Now you have a blank canvas.
Look at all of the items you took away. Which ones fit into your design style? Try classifying the items into two piles: one that fits with your design scheme and one that doesn’t. Then, go through the pile that doesn’t fit and decide what you still want to keep, what you want to display and what you could get rid of. Remember, you’re decluttering, so getting rid of some items is the goal!
Be Your Own Interior Designer
Now comes the fun part! Once you have your décor that goes along with your style, try out different designs until you find exactly what you want. This is your space and your stuff, and with a concrete design style to work with, you can make the space look exactly how you’ve always imagined it.
You can also reorganize and redecorate every single room as often as you’d like — whether it’s moving a table in the living room to adding some different hardware in the the kitchen to rearranging your storage baskets in the bathroom. Every room will have its own unique touch that will make you feel at home.
You have the tools to be your very own interior designer, so have fun decorating and designing!
